Supercars News: Feeney’s dive wins him Sat. race at Darwin
Broc Feeney (No. 88 Red Bull Ampol Chevrolet Camaro) has taken victory in the opening race of the betr Darwin Triple Crown, with an emphatic pass on pole sitter James Golding (No. 31 Nulon Chevrolet Camaro) proving the critical moment in Saturday’s 48-lap race.
It is the 10th win of the 21-year old Feeney’s still young career and fourth of the 2024 Repco Supercars Championship season.
2015 Supercars champion Mark Winterbottom (No. 18 DeWalt Chevrolet Camaro) was second across the line to claim his second podium of the 2024 season.
Championship leader Will Brown (No. 87 Red Bull Ampol Chevrolet Camaro) rounded out the top three, collecting an impressive 10th podium from 11 races so far this season.
Golding, who snared his first career pole position early Saturday afternoon in today’s Boost Mobile Top Ten Shootout, finished fourth equalling a career-best.
Golding led the race from the start into the fourth lap, but a mistake heading into Darwin’s famous hairpin corner, saw both Feeney and Winterbottom pounce on an opportunity to pass the pole sitter and they never looked back from there.
“It was good hard racing with Jimmy there for the first few laps,” Feeney said.
“I knew I had some really good speed, so I got the move done early and then this thing was a rocket ship. The last couple of rounds have been pretty tough, so to bounce back here with a big win is pretty awesome.”
After a shocking run to 22nd in qualifying on Friday, Chaz Mostert (No. 25 Mobil 1 Optus Ford Mustang) made a sensational charge through the field to finish fifth.
Temperatures and tempers both ran high in Race 11, with the Northern Territory’s signature heat complemented by numerous bumps and bingles throughout the 139-kilometer race.
