IMSA: Blomqvist puts #60 Acura on pole for Rolex 24
In the first qualifying session in the new IMSA GTP era, Tom Blomqvist put the #60 Meyer Shank Racing GTP Acura on pole for next weekend’s Rolex 24 at Daytona.
On his final lap, Blomqvist turned a lap of 1m34.031s to beat the #7 Porsche of Felipe Nasr by just 0.083s.
In a session marked by a brief stoppage to clear debris from another competitor’s crash, Blomqvist took advantage of a fresh set of Michelin tires to vault to pole as the checkered flag fell to end the 15-minute qualifying. The pole position is the first for any manufacturer in the new hybrid-powered GTP era of IMSA competition, and the second consecutive pole at Daytona for Acura.
“It was a bit wild,” said the defending IMSA Prototype champion to IMSA TV. “I had no real reference to be honest, I had to wing that one a bit.
“I knew I had a good car, I knew if it was under me that I could do the job, but the tires weren’t even up to temperature so I had to lick the stamp and send it sorta thing.
“Great job by the team, Acura, HPD and Oreca; it’s really promising ahead of next weekend. A lot of work still ahead of us to be back here [in Victory Lane] next weekend.
“Maybe I’ve been lucky with genetics that some things don’t faze me, I dunno. I’ve got a lot of confidence after last year and the team has a lot of faith in me to do the job, which makes my life more relaxing in the car, and that enables me to extract the right kind of performance.”
Team boss Mike Shank said: “I’m so relieved – tribute to HPD, Acura and Honda, all the engineers and mechanics at MSR and, of course, our badass driver Tom Blomqvist. To get one lap to do it… we thought we were screwed when the red flag came out. It was on him today, he is a rockstar, he’s the future and we love having him on board.
“Pole matters when you have high-stakes OEM racing like this. We have to come out here and prove ourselves.
“We’ve got a lot to go on next week, we know that, but this confirms all the work that all the folks have put in. That’s more joy than I’ve felt in a long time.”
“I’m happy with my fastest lap,” said 2nd quick Felipe Nasr. “It’s incredible how much progress we’ve made over the weekend. We’ve now got a better understanding of the quirks of the car and the new tires. Ultimately, our focus is now on the race and the preparation for it. Pole position would’ve been nice, but we’re looking at the big picture – which is the race this coming weekend.”
Ricky Taylor, who did not have a final run, was third quick in the #10 Wayne Taylor Racing with Andretti Autosport Acura in third, 0.167s. Taylor set the two quickest times in qualifying prior to a red flag for an accident by Nick Tandy in the No. 6 Porsche at the Le Mans Chicane with seven minutes to go.
Bourdais had sat idle for the majority of the session, but emerged from the pits to put up the 4th quick time in the #01 Ganassi Cadillac, just nipping his teammate Alex Lynn in the #02 Ganassi Cadillac who rounded out the top-5.
The #31 Action Express Cadillac was 6th fastest with Pipo Derani at the wheel while the two BMW M Hybrid V8s brought up the rear of the nine-car GTP field, led by Phillip Eng in the No. 24 entry, who was less than two-tenths ahead of teammate Nick Yelloly in the No. 25 machine.
Nick Tandy pulled out all stops in the #6 Porsche: the outright Le Mans winner of 2015 set top times in the first two sectors and was on course for pole position – only to lose the rear of his Porsche 963 when braking for the last chicane. The vehicle shot over the grass and crashed into the tire barrier. Despite damage to the front of the car, Tandy managed to drive slowly back to the pits – however, the stewards had already red-flagged the session. The IMSA regulations clearly state that the driver who caused a red flag in qualifying has their two fastest lap times voided. As a result, the No. 6 car will take up the race from the back of the GTP field.
“First of all, I want to thank the team for putting a great car on the track for me today. The new Porsche 963 has never felt so good under such conditions with an open track and the proviso to go max attack. It was simply outstanding! I was on track to set a new personal best, I only had to get through the chicane – but it didn’t work out. The left front wheel locked up under braking and I ended up in the dirt off the racing line. I tried to salvage the car before the second curb, but the rear kicked out. I lost control. Luckily, the damage isn’t too bad. I’ll focus on the positives: the teamwork has been great over the last few days and the car is simply stunning. The 963 is a lot of fun to drive.”
Mercedes AMG on GTD Pole
Philip Ellis scored GTD pole in the #57 Mercedes, leading a Mercedes-AMG sweep of the top four starting positions in the production-based ranks.
The Winward Racing driver reeled off a best lap of 1:46.093 to edge out the No. 75 SunEnergy1 Racing entry of Fabian Schiller by 0.219 seconds.
WeatherTech Racing will start from the pole position in GTD Pro. Maro Engel (Germany) had the controls of the No. 79 WeatherTech Racing Mercedes-AMG GT3 with Mercedes-Benz of Billings, Montana support for the 15-minute qualifying session this afternoon. The Mercedes Factory Driver posted a time of 1:46.784 good for the pole position.
Ben Barnicoat, in the SealMaster liveried No. 14 Vasser Sullivan Lexus RC F GT3, qualified third in GTD PRO behind the #79 Weathertech Mercedes and the #23 Aston Martin.
“Putting the car on pole is definitely a good start to the Rolex 24,” Engel said. “We missed some practice time with the WeatherTech Racing Mercedes-AMG GT3, but we showed well in practice last night and had a good run in qualifying. The car was really good in the session. I was able to get a little faster each lap. As you can see the GTD Pro field is very close, so we are looking forward to a good race next weekend.”
Jules Gounon (France) likes the effort of the team and the qualifying result.
“Amazing. We were able to fix our issues,” Gounon said. “We had a fuel leak that we were able to fix, or we may have lost our baby. Being on pole is great. We have some early points that always helps. The WeatherTech Racing Mercedes-AMG GT3 on pole is great and a great way to start the season.”
LMP2, LMP3 Poles
Ben Keating won the pole in LMP2 in his No. 52 PR1 / Mathiasen Motorsports Oreca 07 Gibson, outpacing the nearest competition by more than a second.
Keating’s 1:40.541 lap time was 1.210 seconds ahead of Francois Heriau in the No. 35 TDS Racing Oreca, with Steven Thomas’ sister TDS machine set to line up third on the grid in class.
LMP3 pole went to the No. 33 Sean Creech Motorsport Ligier JS P320 Nissan of 18-year old Chilean driver Nico Pino, who put up a lap of 1:43.197 to edge out Dakota Dickerson in the No. 36 Andretti Autosport entry by 0.110 seconds.
Pino, who set the team’s quickest lap of the weekend in the second test session on Saturday (with a lap at 1:42.961) held that position after the 15-minute qualifying session, culminating in the team’s second IMSA WeatherTech series pole (the first pole coming last season at Road America) with a lap at 1:43.197.
“This is so special,” said Pino. “To take my first ever pole position at Daytona is amazing. This is a special race for every driver, and it’s a great way to start the season. I had expected oversteer, given how green the track was, but we had a bit of understeer, so we have to work on that – but I think there were four or five tenths left in the car. Now, we need to work on strategy – but it’s good to know we have a clear track in front of us, in terms of LMP3 cars.
“It’s going to be challenging,” continued Pino. “You have to take extra precautions out there, especially with all the LMP2s and hybrid cars out there. If we can survive the first couple of hours when everything is so frantic, and be in a good position, we can go for the win. I’m looking forward to the best result possible – and hopefully taking the watch!”
