Consequently, after WWII ended racing in Las Vegas saw a resurgence in popularity and would stay popular throughout the 1950s and 1960s with both local and national competitions taking place at tracks across town such as Stardust International Raceway (home of NASCAR’s 1962 Stardust 500). After the war ended in 1945, car racing resumed in downtown Las Vegas with races that were held on Fremont Street between Fifth Street and North Main Street. These events were popular throughout the 1950s and 1960s, drawing thousands of spectators every year.
In 1971, a permanent racetrack was built at what is now called the Las Vegas Motor Speedway (LVMS). It initially hosted NASCAR’s Winston Cup Series, then known as Grand National Racing (GNR), but soon expanded to feature a variety of other racing series including NHRA drag racing and IndyCar events.
