NASCAR: Nashville Fairgrounds meets resistance by Board (Update)
According to Nicole Williams of the Tennessee Lookout, There’s no great enthusiasm among the council for this Bristol Motor Speedway – Nashville Fairgrounds proposal.
Nashville Mayor Cooper faces a nearly insurmountable set of procedural roadblocks to getting his last big deal approved, but he hasn’t publicly admitted defeat just yet.
There’s no great enthusiasm among the council for this NASCAR proposal, she writes.
“The fate of the deal now rests in the hands of the Metro Council, and it’s been clear for some time now that John Cooper simply does not have the votes.
“Months of intense lobbying and a full court press from the mayor’s office couldn’t even get Cooper to 27 votes for the Titans stadium. Bristol Motor Speedway has hired some of the same lobbyists the Titans did, but council members aren’t experiencing anywhere near the level of pressure they were to get the stadium deal done.”
“The mayor’s office hasn’t publicly admitted defeat, but they’re not necessarily pressing the issue either.
“There’s no great enthusiasm among the council for this proposal. I can count on one finger the number of council members who are just dying to pass a speedway deal in the final days of this term.
“Even if Cooper had the votes, though, it wouldn’t matter. He doesn’t have the time.”
Perhaps NASCAR has not greased enough pockets yet, but time is running out.

The Nashville Fairgrounds Speedway could be on track to get a new makeover, but the proposal is being met with lots of concerns from community members.
One by one people took to the podium to share their thoughts on a plan that would have Bristol Motor Speedway managing, operating and maintaining the Nashville Fairgrounds Speedway.
Nearly two dozen people spoke against the proposal, while a dozen others shared their reasons for support including life-long NASCAR fan Norm Partin.
“I know this is a good thing for the city. I’m a taxpayer first and if it wasn’t good with taxpayers I would be against it,” Partin said.
He said the plan would help revitalize the historic track without costing taxpayers anything. News Channel 5
