F1: Leclerc tops 2nd practice for Ferrari at Hungarian GP
Charles Leclerc kept Ferrari on top in the 2nd practice session for Sunday’s Hungarian GP with a time of 1m18.445s. Ferrari is expected to win this weekend, and even their long run, heavy fuel, times were good.
Lando Norris was a surprise 2nd for McLaren, 0.217s behind the Ferrari.
Carlos Sainz Jr. was a close 3rd in the 2nd Ferrari, 0.231s behind his teammate.
Points leader Max Verstappen could only manage 4th best, 0.283s behind in his Red Bull.
Daniel Ricciardo rounded out the top5 in the 2nd McLaren, 0.427s off pace.
Fernando Alonso was 6th for Alpine while Sebastian Vettel was a surprise 7th for the Aston Martin using a new rear wing.
The Mercedes drivers struggled for grip with George Russell 8th, 0.910s back and Lewis Hamilton 11th 1.102s behind.
The two Mercedes were split by the Red Bull of Perez and the Alfa Romeo of Valtteri Bottas.
Another mostly quiet session then, with plenty of laps, plenty of learning and just the one spin – an odd one for Albon, which looked more likely to be car related than driver error although Williams are keeping their cards close to their chest at the moment.
If the rain does arrive tomorrow as forecast, there could be a very mixed up grid and that could throw all sorts of spanners in the works for the strategists.
