IndyCar: Two Crashes interrupt Indy 500 Carb Day Practice
With no incidents all month, in today’s short practice session, David Malukas, driving the no 18 HMD Dale Coyne Racing with HMD entry, touched wheels with Santino Ferrucci, driving the no 23 Palermo’s Screamin Sicilian DRR entry, and went up into the safety barrier in the short chute, doing damage to all four corners of his car. Malukas was released from the Medical Center and cleared to drive.
‘I am OK. That was the biggest hit I have ever had. But I came out of it with only a small bruise.”
Ferrucci was held in his pit box for 20 minutes after the incident in a penalty for avoidable contact levied by INDYCAR officials.
Contact between Santino Ferrucci and David Malukas sends the #Indy500 into the Turn 1 wall at @IMS.
Ferrucci was parked for the remainder of practice.

Then just 20 minutes after that incident, Colton Herta, driver of the no 26 Gainbridge Andretti Autosport w/Curb-Agajanian entry, got loose in Turn 1 and did a quarter spin. The car made contact with the right rear in the SAFER barrier and then overturned. The car did make secondary contact with the front of the car in Turn 2. The AMR safety team was at the disabled car in 8 seconds. It took 10 safety workers to put the car right side up.
The car suffered extensive damage.
Herta, winner of the GMR Grand Prix here two weeks ago, was able to radio this team that he was OK. Another good save by the aeroscreen.
