2012 Mercedes SL to get SLS look

The next generation hardtop convertible Mercedes-Benz SL hits dealers in 2012 and it seems Mercedes now wants us to see more about the newcomer as previous heavy disguise is gradually replaced by tape and stickers on test mules. What's clear is that new SL takes more than just a passing resemblance to its SLS gullwing and CL coupe siblings.

Mercedes is clearly benchmarking next SL against the best of British cars as the image shows while it's styling promises to be a cross between the current SL and the SLS front while meeting stringent new pedestrian protection safety regulations. Next SL is has shorter overhangs a wider track and lower ride height.
Set to be produced in Mercedes' Sindelfingen plant, the SL brings a new generation aluminum spaceframe to market along with significant weight savings to ensure better performance and leaner fuel use and emissions from Mercedes latest range of V6 and V8 engines. A hybrid version is also said to be under development.
Inside, SL will blend new SLS aspects with familiar SL trends with two air vents flanking the Mercedes SLS multifunction display with two air conditioner knobs and a dash boasting chrome ringed circular instruments far enough apart to leave room for a screen.
