Champ Car drivers signal for merger

Champ Car drivers say a unified open-wheel series would benefit all concerned, especially with the ever-growing popularity of the NASCAR Nextel Cup Series.
"We need one series," said Champ Car driver Justin Wilson, who pilots the No. 9 CDW Ford-Cosworth for the Loveland-based RuSPORT team.

Some minor progress has been made recently in the possible merger between Champ Car World Series and its rival, the Indy Racing League.

"Having the two series competing against each other isn't good for either one of us," Wilson said. "I know I want to race against the best drivers in the world. Unfortunately, the merger is something drivers like myself don't have any influence on."

A.J. Allmendinger, who drives the No. 7 Indeck Forsythe Championship Racing entry, echoed Wilson.

"I think it's a necessity that we have one series," said Allmendinger, a native Californian who is the only American driver in the Champ Car series. "But, I don't worry about something I have no control over."

Sebastien Bourdais, who is behind the wheel of the No. 1 Newman Haas Racing McDonald's entry, said having one series is a "necessity."

"I would be happy if we had one series," said Bourdais, who has won the past two Champ Car series championships. "It just doesn't seem to be happening though." Rocky Mountain News

[Editor's Note: Given recent moves by both sides that clearly undermine the other, it's hard to imagine that a merger is going to happen for years, if ever…..unless they are the best diversionary tactics to fool the media in racing history.]
