Successful testing kicks off GAINSCO team’s weekend

WATKINS GLEN, N.Y. – The GAINSCO/Bob Stallings Racing duo of Alex Gurney and Jon Fogarty continued their speedy ways today at Watkins Glen International, as they took part in unofficial testing for Saturday’s Grand-Am Rolex Sports Car Series Sahlen’s Six Hours of the Glen. While lap times were not recorded, both drivers set quick times in the No. 99 GAINSCO Auto Insurance Pontiac-powered Riley, and that built confidence for tomorrow’s official practice and qualifying.

Those sessions begin with practices at 9:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. In Daytona Prototype qualifying, which goes green at 4:20 p.m, Gurney will attempt to continue the GAINSCO team’s five-race streak of front-row starts, dating back to his pole in the season-opening Rolex 24 At Daytona.

Driver/Owner Quotes:

Alex Gurney: “Today was a really good day, because we were able to pick up where we left off at Laguna Seca – the GAINSCO car is very fast again. Most importantly, we used the testing time well and got quicker throughout the day. Now our job is to focus on the things that will get us from being fast to winning races. It’s a very promising start, and I’m excited to be qualifying for the first time since I got the pole at the 24 Hours back in January. I’m hoping to put the 99 up top again."

Jon Fogarty: “We ended the day with a good race car, and that’s what you want to do in these test days. We had a feeling when we unloaded that we’d be good, and we definitely built on that with Alex in the first session and then when I was in the car in the afternoon. The GAINSCO car is really easy to drive fast, and that will make a difference as the race wears on – it’s a true endurance event. Watkins Glen is one of the most fun places to race on our schedule – as a driver, it’s awesome because there’s nowhere that’s really slow. It puts a premium on momentum and consistency."

Bob Stallings: “Our consistent speed is a real tribute to a total team effort. Both Alex and Jon are right on their game, the GAINSCO Boys are giving us a car that’s ready to go out of the truck everywhere we go, and what can you say about Kyle Brannan – he spent a lot of time in the off-season working to make this car go faster at different tracks, and those efforts are getting results."
