Richmond through the years

As the rain began to fall on lap 250 of the 1982 400-lap Richmond 400, Joe Ruttman appeared to be on the way to his first NASCAR win. As he raced to the caution flag, Ruttman's Buick lost a wheel, sending him into a spin off turn four as Dave Marcis cruised past for his final career win. Richard Petty wins the Richmond 500 in 1975, making it nine of the last 10 events he’d won at Richmond. Petty had also captured the pole starting position.

Neil Bonnett beats native Virginian Ricky Rudd by one second to pick up his 17th career victory. The 1988 Pontiac Excitement 400 was the final NASCAR event to run on the speedway's half-mile configuration, a layout which dates back to 1946. Construction began the next day on a new .75-mile track.

After a terrifying spill during the 1984 Busch Clash at Daytona, forcing Ricky Rudd to compete in the 500 with his swollen eyes literally taped open, Rudd went on to not only compete in the Miller High Life 400 at Richmond two weeks later, he won the race by a margin of 3.2 seconds over Darrell Waltrip.

The 1964 Richmond 250 turned into a two-day affair as the first 100 laps were run on Sunday, then the event was delayed by rain. The remainder of the race was held on Tuesday nigh under the lights as David Pearson took the win, his first since 1961.
