Speedway seeks OK for land rezoning

International Speedway Corp. is seeking city and state permission to change the zoning of a 214-acre pasture across Williamsom Boulevard from the new Daytona Beach Kennel Club and Poker Room.

However, the company has no special plans for the property except to continue using it for temporary parking during races, a Speedway official said.

The Planning Board will hold a City Hall hearing June 26 at 6 p.m. on whether the city's comprehensive plan should reclassify the land as a commercial amusement area.

The plan currently reserves it for light industrial use.

The Speedway will build nothing there except a paved lot with 300 to 400 handicapped-parking spaces, said John Graham, Speedway's vice president of public affairs.

It will have access both to Williamson Boulevard and Bellevue Avenue Extension, and shuttles will transfer fans to the track every few minutes on race days.

Graham described the rezoning as a technical change that would give that parcel the same classification as other nearby land owned by ISC.

The land has been used for several years as a dirt parking lot during races. At other times, most of the acreage is used as a cow pasture and hayfield. More at Daytona Beach News Journal
