Rosberg gives Russian GP the thumbs up

Nico Rosberg has given plans to bring Formula One to Russia a ringing endorsement. The Williams driver gave Moscow residents a taste of Formula One last week when he hustled the FW29 around the perimeter of the Kremlin and Red Square as part of a promotional event.

When asked if he thought Formula One could take off in Russia the German responded to his team’s official podcast:

“I really think so, definitely yes. Why not? In terms of business it would be a really interesting place to go for Formula One."

“Also for fans, I’m sure they would be really enthusiastic once they start to get introduced to the sport."

“It’s a fantastic sport but I don’t see why the Russians can’t be really into it. I’m sure they love their cars, so it would be great for the Russians to have that sport near them."

F1 Supremo Bernie Ecclestone has been trying to organize a Grand Prix in Russia for several years and St. Petersburg and Moscow are both in with a chance of hosting the event.

Ecclestone visited St. Petersburg earlier this year to discuss holding the grand prix on a purpose-built track from 2010.

“Nothing is done yet but this could be an interesting development for the sport," he said.

“We’d like to get it in the calendar as soon as we can but that depends on them. It’s down to how long it takes them to get the circuit ready."
