Sunday Notebook from Indy – 1
Tire wear woes continue today here at the Brickyard as teams prepare for today's Allstate 400 Sprint Cup race. The Goodyear tires were wearing out down to the cords within 3 to 5 laps on Friday. Yesterday, with more rubber on the track, it was 10 laps before the cords were showing.
As a backup plan for what looks like a complete and utter disaster, two things have been done. Goodyear brought in Pocono tires overnight. There will be a competition yellow at lap 10 and at lap 20. If the tires are junk the race will be red-flagged and Pocono tires will be mounted on all the wheels and the race restarted. Talk about yet another PR nightmare for Goodyear and for NASCAR. Stick a fork in Goodyear, they're done.
