White and other Toyota officials were angry when NASCAR first made the rule change last Tuesday, but that anger has turned into “righteous indignation."
White said Toyota doesn’t believe there was any prejudice toward the company over the change and admitted that the rule change likely came about because Toyota had too much success too soon.
“Unfortunately, that’s our job," White said. “That’s how we make our living."
White remembers talking to late NASCAR President Bill France Jr. before Toyota entered the stock-car ranks.
“He welcomed us to win, but just by this much," said White, holding his index finger and thumb close together.
“What this does is, I’m a little concerned about potential violation of trust because I feel like our teams have to trust these guys to look after our interests," White said of NASCAR. “But we also understand that they have to look after everyone’s interests. And we have to understand that everyone’s who’s been at that whiner trough soaking up all that slop has been characterizing that their sponsors don’t have any opportunities unless they have a Toyota. …
“I’m almost of the opinion that being singled out in this fashion is the highest compliment that NASCAR could have paid us for our effort, our hard work, the materials we have, the expertise we have, our teams, our drivers." Scenedaily.com
