Truex tops opening practice in Kansas

Dale Earnhardt Inc.'s Martin Truex Jr. set the pace in Friday's opening Sprint Cup Series practice at Kansas Speedway in preparation for Sunday's Camping World RV 400 at the 1.5-mile track.

Truex, who is still seeking his first win of the season, posted a top speed of 172.221 mph in his DEI Chevrolet. He was followed by Chase For The Sprint Cup contender Jimmie Johnson (Hendrick Motorsports) at 171.614. DEI's Mark Martin was third, followed by Chip Ganassi Racing's Juan Pablo Montoya and Gillett Evernham Motorsports' Elliott Sadler.

Hendrick teammates Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Casey Mears were sixth and seventh, respectively, followed by Red Bull Racing's AJ Allmendinger and DEI's Paul Menard.

Chase contender Tony Stewart (Joe Gibbs Racing) rounded out the top 10.
