Rahal turns 20
Newman/Haas/Lanigan Racing driver Graham Rahal left his teen years behind yesterday and celebrated his 20th birthday at home in New Albany, Ohio. Rahal, who was born on January 4, 1989, became the youngest winner in IndyCar Series history when he drove to victory in his series debut in the Honda Grand Prix of St. Petersburg on April 6, 2008 at the age of 19 years and 93 days old. Following is a Q&A on his milestone birthday:
What did you do to celebrate your 20th birthday?
"I truthfully didn’t do anything really. I had a nice quiet day which was exactly what I wanted. I spent time last night with family and friends at my house playing some pool and that was perfect."
Were there any memorable gifts?
"I didn't receive any memorable gifts this year, but all of the family has really given up on giving gifts to one another. We have decided to spend the money on good vacations together instead!"
What are your thoughts about leaving your teenage years behind?
"It doesn’t really matter to me to not be a teen anymore. Now that I am in my 20's some people might have a little more respect for me. I have worked hard to earn respect but it might come easier now that I am not a teenager."
What are your fondest memories of your teenage years?
"My fondest memories are of trips to my mom's family's home in Canada or going on vacations over the years. I had some great times that I will always remember. I have great memories of racing as a teenager as well and all the success there makes the vacations even sweeter, so it all works together."
What is your focus now that the holidays have passed?
"Now the focus is fitness. I just want to work hard and be in great shape so we can go and fight for a championship this season!"
