Lime Rock Memorial Day weekend events
As part of the Memorial Day Road Racing Classic at Lime Rock Park, 22-25 May, which features the Grand-Am KONI Challenge series, restored F1 machines will be racing under the aegis of Historic Grand Prix, the group dedicated to the preservation and use of these great race cars.
Cars driven to success by some of the greatest racers in the world will undoubtedly come close to breaking the Lime Rock Park track record, in an unmatched demonstration of technical sophistication, power and handling.
This weekend’s HGP drivers include England’s Divina Galica, 64, a successful driver from the 1970s through the early 1990s who is not only one of the few women to have competed in F1, she was an Olympic skier and was bestowed the highest civil honorary allowed for women in England, a MBE: Member of the British Empire, in recognition of her service to sport. Galica keeps homes in Lakeville, Conn. Sebring, Fla., and the UK.
Danbury’s Duncan Dayton will be driving the unforgettable John Player Special Lotus, which won the World Championship for Mario Andretti in 1978; Bob Baker pilots the evocative Brabham, with which Jack Brabham won the third of his World Formula One Championships; while other world famous F1 marques blistering Lime Rock Park’s one-and-a-half mile circuit include McLaren, Ferrari, Wolf, Penske and Cooper.
The Road Racing Classic on Memorial Day Weekend features Grand-Am’s fender banging sports car championship, the KONI Challenge – the ST Class race is Saturday, the GS Class event on Monday – plus the always exciting open-wheel F2000 Championship. There are many local drivers competing in those series, including Adam Burrows of Canton, Conn., and a member of The Club at Lime Rock Park, Peter Ludwig of New Paltz, N.Y.
