(GMM) Lewis Hamilton's Saturday nightmare went from bad to worse in Monaco, after the Briton crashed out of Q1 despite earlier looking a contender for a front row berth. The Briton was due to start 16th on the grid, but the damage to his McLaren required an unscheduled gearbox change, which pushes him a further five places down the grid to last.

Race director Charlie Whiting warned F1's drivers on Saturday morning about cutting the Monaco curbs, and installed observers at key sections including the Nouvelle and Swimming Pool chicanes. Giancarlo Fisichella had two of his fast times deleted for this reason in qualifying.

Red Bull's Sebastian Vettel was disappointed to qualify fourth at Monaco, after encountering a slow-moving Kazuki Nakajima. It later emerged that his car will be the lightest on the grid, carrying 16kg less fuel than pole sitter Jenson Button.
