Johnson and Biffle run dry, Martin wins
Martin took advantage of better fuel mileage to win the LifeLock 400 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race. Martin was running third going into the thrilling final lap, but he was able to cruise by race leaders Jimmie Johnson and Greg Biffle, who both ran out of fuel.
The win came on the 11th anniversary of Martin's last Cup win at MIS in 1998. Jeff Gordon finished second, followed by Denny Hamlin in third, Carl Edwards in fourth and Biffle in fifth. Johnson, who led going into the final lap, coasted home in 22nd place. Johnson took the lead from Biffle with in Turn 2 of Lap 195 and appeared on his way to victory when his car slowed in front of the main grandstand as he began the 200th and final lap.
Biffle retook the lead only to slow on the backstretch of the final lap as Martin roared by for his first win at MIS since 1998.
"(Biffle and Johnson) had to race one another and push each other harder than they wanted to," Gordon said. "It makes for a great story, but it's a big dissappointment for the 16 and the 48." Martin started 32nd and ran within in the top-three during the last 50 laps.
The field came in for its final round of pits during a caution period brought out when David Stremme spun in Turn 4 on lap 150. The expected pit window at MIS is 42-46 laps. More to follow….
