Alonso fined for pit lane speeding
Fernando Alonso's final disappointing weekend with the Renault team was compounded by a pit lane speeding penalty, handed out by race stewards five minutes before the start of the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix on Sunday. The Spaniard was judged to have driven too quickly down the speed-limited lane before the start of the race.
With all cars leaving the pits approximately 20 minutes before the start of the Grand Prix in order to complete a reconnaissance lap before lining up on the grid for final pre-race preparations, the Renault driver exceeded the 100km/h (62mph) limit and was recorded travelling at 111.2km/h (69mph).
As a consequence, the FIA-appointed stewards issued a fine of €2,400 for a breach of article 30.12 of the sporting regulations. With each kilometer exceeded generating a fine of €200, the FIA added another €200 to account for the extra 0.2km.
