NASCAR’s biggest turkeys of 2009
Kyle Busch — His poor imitation of Pete Townshend left spectators at Nashville Superspeedway and TV viewers at home stunned as he grabbed the hand-painted Gibson guitar trophy and smashed it on the pavement. He thought it would be a cool celebration. It wasn’t. Sam Bass, who spent many hours creating the design on the instrument only to watch Busch smash it in about 10 seconds, wasn’t laughing. On the plus side, at least Kyle didn’t set the guitar on fire and kick over the amps.
Jeremy Mayfield — The case of Jeremy Mayfield v. NASCAR is starting to deteriorate faster than a meth addict’s dental work. A change of venue should be granted moving this case from federal court to the Jerry Springer Show. Mayfield’s ex-stepmother would have to be on the show, but there would need to be extra security guards on hand when the chairs start to fly.
Danica Patrick — Enough teasing already! Never in the history of NASCAR has there been so much attention paid to the future plans of a potential part-timer in the Nationwide Series. Her Indy sponsor, GoDaddy.com, says an announcement is coming on Monday. Let’s hope it’s more than another shower commercial.
Dave Blaney — Perfected the art of start-and-park with eight last-place finishes and 27 finishes of 40th or worse. His car vibrates so much it violates Alabama’s obscenity laws.
Brad Keselowski — Rookie got plucked and served up on a platter at Homestead by Denny Hamlin. The only thing missing was the cranberry sauce. By the end of the year the fans’ choice as Most Popular Driver in the Nationwide Series was leading the standings for the Least Popular Driver in the Garage trophy. AL.com
