Massa backs safety car talks

Felipe Massa has agreed that discussions surrounding the use of the Safety Car are necessary following the controversy of last weekend’s European Grand Prix. Although Ferrari was affected by a sheer lack of luck, the Scuderia is still angry over what they believe was a light drive-through penalty for Lewis Hamilton.

Hamilton’s McLaren could be seen narrowly overtaking the Safety Car as it was deployed, with both Ferraris having to sit behind and therefore lose positions due to already being past the pit entrance whereas rivals were able to dive in straight away.

“It was a matter of moments and we were very unlucky in that we had to spend a very long time behind the Safety Car, whereas Vettel was already ahead of the Safety Car before it came on-track and Hamilton chose to pass it, thus breaking the rules," Massa commented.

“I don’t particularly want to go over what happened after that because it changes nothing in that our race was ruined. However, what happened needs to be looked into because it is not normal than someone commits a serious infraction like overtaking the Safety Car when there is a dangerous situation on-track and not really being penalized in practical terms."

As first revealed by Force India Team Manager Andy Stevenson earlier in the week, teams are now set to confer over the Safety Car subject ahead of the upcoming British Grand Prix.

“We must talk about this together and do something to ensure a situation like this does not happen again. The team has told me that next week there will be a meeting of the Sporting Working Group; that’s good and it’s an obvious indication that (Formula 1 governing body) the FIA is paying close attention to the matter."
