Weekly NASCAR cheating report

UPDATE NASCAR handed down penalties to the No. 88 Nationwide Series team due to failing the post-race inspection last week at O'Reilly Raceway Park. Officials found an unapproved left front shock absorber. Crew chief Tony Eury Sr. was fined $10,000, owner Dale Earnhardt Jr. was docked 25 owner points and driver Aric Almirola was penalized 25 driver points.

07/26/10 NASCAR Nationwide Series officials confiscated the left front shock of the third-place JR Motorsports No. 88 car driven by Aric Almirola following the Kroger 200 on Saturday night at O’Reilly Raceway Park.

The left front shock, which failed to rebound, will be evaluated at the NASCAR research and development center in North Carolina, a NASCAR spokesman said.

Any penalties, if forthcoming, would be likely handed out Tuesday or Wednesday.
