Shane Hmiel to undergo more surgery
Former NASCAR driver Shane Hmiel remains in critical but stable condition while sedated at Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis and is scheduled for more surgery Friday for injuries suffered in a Silver Crown accident Saturday at the Terre Haute (Ind.) Action Track.
Hmiel has responded to command by moving both arms and doctors attending him are encouraged but remain guarded. He appears to have no head trauma but suffered fractures of both the neck and back, according to a U.S. Auto Club news release.
He has surgery scheduled for Friday to put a stent in a torn artery, according to a Facebook page designed to update fans on his recovery. The 30-year-old Hmiel already has undergone neck and back surgeries. He also suffered spinal cord injuries, according to the family, and since they are not mentioning anything about movement in his legs, it's possible he may have paralysis from those spinal cord injuries.
