Williams still cannot make flywheel KERS viable in small F1 cars

The Kinetic Energy Recover System (KERS) makes a comeback in Formula 1 this year, Williams admit that they have been unable to make use of the flywheel system which they hoped to debut in 2009 but will attempt to use next year.

KERS first made an F1 appearance two years ago before the teams agreed not to deploy the system in 2010 on cost-cutting grounds.

During the 2009 season, however, Williams had hoped to use their revolutionary system which is powered by a flywheel and not a battery, although it remains out of action for now.

“We did consider a flywheel for this car." Technical Director Sam Michael explained on Thursday. “It was very close but the packaging stopped us. We haven’t stopped considering it, it won’t be in 2011 but it could be in 2012 – flywheel versus battery."
