Teams modify overalls to comply with regulations

No less than three Formula 1 teams have been forced to make small changes to their drivers’ race overalls at the Nürburgring. The modification came after governing body the FIA reminded them that insignia – explaining that the overalls are deemed legal – must be sewn on to the back of the collar, instead of screen-printed.

Ferrari, Mercedes and Force India are all believed to have screen printed the various digits to the back of the drivers’ overalls in a novel bid to save weight, as opposed to placing the badge by means of embroidery.

FIA rules relating to the matter read as follows:

‘The label shall be embroidered directly onto the outermost label of the outer garment and on the rear of the collar so as to be easily visible.’
