NJ USGP postponed until 2014

Fans of Formula One who expected to witness open-wheel racing on the streets of Weehawken and West New York, N.J., will have to wait another year.

The organizers of the Grand Prix of America, who hoped to stage a race along the Hudson River waterfront in 2013, with the skyscrapers of Manhattan just beyond, have decided to push their plans back a year. The postponement was reported by the Jersey Journal, citing Weehawken’s mayor, Richard Turner.

Stephen Sigmund, a spokesman for the race effort led by Leo Hindery, the media executive who had promoted the event, declined to comment, but said a statement would be released on Friday.

The race appeared on the 2013 Formula One calendar ratified by the F.I.A., the series’ governing body, last month, but with an asterisk indicating it had not been confirmed. The race organizers have been working on the logistics of staging a 3.2-mile race along the street course and also on locating investors to help pay for it.
