09/23/14 The famed Indianapolis Motor Speedway 2.5-mile oval played host to a Verizon IndyCar Series Firestone tire test on Tuesday, Sept. 23 but we have no clue how fast or slow anyone went because no test speeds were made available. Apparently it's best to keep IndyCar fans in the dark in the long off-season so they lose interest.
Verizon IndyCar Series drivers participating in the event included three-time Indianapolis 500 winner Helio Castroneves of Team Penske, 2014 Indianapolis 500 winner Ryan Hunter-Reay of Andretti Autosport, two-time Indianapolis 500 pole-sitter Ed Carpenter of CFH Racing and inaugural Angie’s List Grand Prix of Indianapolis winner Simon Pagenaud of Schmidt Peterson Hamilton Motorsports.
Castroneves: "You cannot ask for a more perfect day, no wind, beautiful sunshine, just perfect. Anytime you’re at the Speedway, it’s a learning day. It’s just perfect. With four drivers here, we’re able to find what’s the best (tire) for the future."
Hunter-Reay: "It’s always good to have extra testing at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. We’re working on a good tire for the whole series. Firestone’s doing a great job with it."
On his first trip back to IMS since winning the Indianapolis 500: "It’s thrilling to be back. That first lap out (today) was pretty special, thinking about the memories of what we had this year."
Testing will resume on Wednesday, Sept. 24, from 9 a.m.-5 p.m., and fans are welcome to watch from the South Terrace grandstands and the Turn 2 viewing mounds adjacent to the IMS Hall of Fame Museum.
