INDIANAPOLIS (Oct. 21, 2014) — Schmidt Peterson Motorsports (SPM) has been an integral part of the Indy Lights presented by Cooper Tires series for more than a decade, capturing seven championship titles. With the purchase of two brand-new AER-powered Dallara IL-15 cars, the team also will be a fixture in the series’ future.
“SPM is the only team that has competed in Indy Lights since its inception," team owner Sam Schmidt said. “We believe that the series is a vital step to reach the Verizon IndyCar Series, and the number of current IndyCar drivers who previously participated in Indy Lights is proof that the system works. We are proud to announce our official entry into the series for 2015 and look forward to the incredible competition that will be created by the new chassis and its formula."
The new car features the Dallara IL-15 chassis and Advanced Engine Research’s 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine. SPM Verizon IndyCar Series driver James Hinchcliffe tested the car Sept. 5 on the Indianapolis Motor Speedway road course.
SPM IndyCar driver James Hinchcliffe tested the new chassis last month at IMS. |
“Everything ran smoothly, and we had no reliability issues with the package," Hinchcliffe said. “This is the right time to introduce a new chassis and a new turbo-charged engine for Indy Lights. Up-and-coming drivers are going to get a much better feel of what they will be moving up to – dealing with the latest in turbo-charged engines and higher downforce."
Former SPM Indy Lights champions Tristan Vautier and Josef Newgarden also offered rave reviews after testing the new car.
“The interest level and enthusiasm for next season in Indy Lights has been incredible," said Dan Andersen, owner and CEO of Andersen Promotions, which sanctions the Indy Lights series. “To have Sam (Schmidt) come on board with a two-car commitment speaks volumes. He is such a staunch supporter of the series, and we are excited to have the winningest Indy Lights team back in the paddock."
SPM’s first opportunity to see the new cars on track will be Dec. 16 and 17 at Palm Beach International Raceway in Florida. Driver announcements for the team’s 2015 Indy Lights program will be made in coming weeks. For the latest team updates, follow @SPMIndyCar on Twitter.
