Miles discusses Brasilia cancellation
Mark Miles |
In an interview on RACEDAY with FOX Sports' Bruce Martin, Hulman and Company CEO Mark Miles discussed the cancellation of the 2015 Verizon IndyCar Series opener in Brasilia.
Below we highlight a few points made by Miles:
On the cancellation:
- Miles is still not sure exactly why race was cancelled
- He believes there was a political problem national and state government, which resulted in decision to not go forward with funding for track improvements
On schedule going forward:
- Citing his experience in tennis, Miles questioned the notion that international events are inherently flawed, saying they are 'doable.' (Editor's note: Miles is 100% correct here. Formula 1 races in 20 countries a year successfully and numerous sporting events are held are all annually all over the globe. There is no reason why INDYCAR cannot be successful internationally)
- Miles made clear INDYCAR is not trying to shorten the season, rather shift season earlier
- Ideally, Miles would like an 8-month schedule with as many as 20 races that begins after the Super Bowl and ends around Labor Day Weekend
- Will continue to pursue international events at the beginning of the schedule
On the possibility of what might be done with the open date now available:
- Miles was non-committal but did say the series was looking at options
- Also, noted there could be an announcement as early as Monday
