Larry Dixon Walks Away From Spectacular Crash

NHRA Top Fuel driver Larry Dixon escaped serious injury after a spectacular crash during Saturday's opening qualifying session for Sunday's NHRA Amalie Motor Oil Gatornationals at Auto-Plus Raceway in Gainesville, Fla.

Dixon had just reached the finish line on his qualifying pass when his dragster became airborne and broke in half, sending the cockpit crashing down to the track and hard into the outside wall.

Dixon was immediately attended to by members of the NHRA Safety Safari and was able to exit the car under his won power. Dixon was later checked and released from the care center.

At the time of the crash, Dixon was fourth among 20 entrants trying to make the field for Sunday's event. The front end of Dixon's broken dragster took out the finish-line cones and the time from his run as thrown out. Doug Kalitta, who was in the other lane, crossed the center line during his run and was also DQ'd.
