Bonneville Speed Week 2015 Cancelled  Due to Wet Salt

Dry lakes are supposed to be, well, dry, but that's not the case at Bonneville this year: The salt flats have been pounded by summer rain, leaving too little suitable surface for the 2015 Speed Week to go on as planned. After a weekend spent scouting for enough dry salt to allow even a single racing line, the Southern California Timing Association has moved to cancel this year's Speed Week, for the second consecutive year. The event was slated to run August 8th-14th.

Hot Rod reports that a majority of Speed Week entrants voted to hold the event this year if a single three-mile short was found to be dry enough for competition. But on Monday, the SCTA announced that SCTA President and Race Director Bill Lattin, along with the chairman of the Bureau of Land Management, were only able to find 2 1/4 miles of safe racing surface. "The rest of the salt flats are either wet or wet and muddy," the organization posted on Facebook. "If the wet salt gets dry, future events could be possible."

Lattin confirmed to Hot Rod that the SCTA still plans to hold the World Finals on September 29th-October 2nd of this year, assuming surface conditions improve.
