‘Significant progress’ over GP2/F2 discussions
The FIA is keen to see the re-introduction of Formula 2, which was last run by MSV between 2009-12, in order to complete the junior motorsport ladder, with focus having been placed on Formula 3 and Formula 4 championships in recent years.
The FIA outlined the potential format for Formula 2 earlier in 2015, and in July the sport's governing body confirmed that the GP2 Series had lodged an interest in becoming the promoter.
"Significant progress has been made in negotiations with the promoter of GP2 regarding the establishment of the final step in the FIA's single-seater ladder; the FIA Formula 2 Championship," read an FIA statement.
"Discussions remain ongoing with the intention of finalizing an agreement."
When asked by GPUpdate.net whether the changes could be introduced in time for the 2016 season, a GP2 spokesperson said it was "too soon to tell."
GP2 has been the final step on the ladder to Formula 1 since 2005, when it replaced Formula 3000 as the primary support series at Grand Prix weekends.
