Legendary Car Designer George Barris Dies
Barris died Thursday according to a post by his son, Brent Barris, on Facebook.
"Sorry to have to post that my father, legendary custom car king George Barris, has moved to the bigger garage in the sky. He passed on peacefully in his sleep at 2:45 a.m.," Brett Barris said in his post on Facebook. "He lived his life the way he wanted til the end. He would want everyone celebrate the passion he had for life and for what he created for all to enjoy."
Barris designed many iconic cars that appeared in both television and movies, including the Batmobile from the 1960s television show Batman, the coach used on The Munsters television show, the DeLorean used in Back to the Future and the General Lee on The Dukes of Hazzard.
Of all his creations, the most legendary is easily his Batmobile creation. The car was auctioned at a collector-car auction in January 2013 in Arizona and fetched $4.6 million.
