Pre-Race Update from Belle Isle (Update)

UPDATE It's 3 p.m. here in Detroit, the drivers are being introduced and the sun is shining. We'll see how the weather turns out. I'm off to pit road.

06/05/16 We're about an hour and 45 minutes away from the green flag for Chevrolet Dual 2 in Detroit. And the topic on everyone's mind is simple: weather.

As I look out the media center window here on Belle Isle, the sky is getting ominously dark outside. There was some rain for about 10 minutes an hour ago, but the sun came out afterwards. So Mother Nature seems to be having difficulty making up her mind. And if you go through the paddock and ask the teams what they think the weather will do you're bound to get a variety of answers. Some are predicting right before the race, others think it will start when the race does, others think it might come about halfway in, etc., etc.

Whatever the case, it should make for an interesting race.

As many of you probably know, the old CART headquarters were originally located in the Detroit area. So, as is usually the case here in Detroit, there are several former CART officials here watching the IndyCars and catching up with old friends. We bumped into former head of logistics for CART and AR1 reader Billy Kamphausen, who was here showing Robert Craig and his friend, Cameron Derian around pit lane yesterday. Robert is the 19 year old son of Andrew Craig. Craig was chairman and CEO of the CART Indycar/Champ Car World Series from 1994 to 2000.

Mazda Road to Indy standout Matthew Brabham won the Stadium Super Trucks race 1 on Friday. He drove on Sunday in first Indy 500 and then moved into a quick truck for this weekend. Driving Robby Gordon's neon orange number 7, Brabham was smiling when I talked with later in the day. "I think the Indianapolis Motor Speedway has become my favorite track. I love both ovals and street courses. I am talking with anyone I can to continue racing in the IndyCar series."

Robby Gordon, who is driving today in the SST race 2, was absent from the Friday race due to him driving in the Baja race. Gordon, who won the IndyCar race here on Belle Isle in 1996 created the SST series in response to the public's overwhelming interest in trucks and off-road racing.

The Saturday SST race was red flagged and cancelled after an accident where the truck of Australian Matt Mingay flipped over and over and the top of truck came off. Mingay is still in hospital in serious but stable condition.

And race 2 just completed with Matthew Brabham winning his second time this weekend.

I will update you as we get closer to race time…..
