IndyCars won’t be returning to MIS

One of the last IndyCar races at MIS in 2007 – the grandstands were so empty you could shoot a cannon into them and not hit anyone

Michigan International Speedway, which fielded six IndyCar events from 2002-2007 and was a CART and USAC mainstay since 1968, even hosting the Indianapolis 500 alternative U.S. 500 in 1996, is unlikely to return to the fold, according to track president Roger Curtis.

The track hosts two Sprint Cup dates — the first this weekend — and although an affinity remains for open-wheel racing among track leadership, the concert business has proved more lucrative. MIS will again hold its Faster Horses country music festival this summer, and Curtis told USA TODAY Sports last June that with the show "drawing 100,000 and selling more campsites than NASCAR, I kind of like the music festival business. … (Without a sanctioning fee), the margin is a lot higher than an open-wheel race is for us."
