Gisbergen wins Sat. race on streets of Surfers Paradise

Shane van Gisbergen has moved closer to his first Virgin Australia Supercars Championship with a commanding win at the Castrol Gold Coast 600.

The young Kiwi overcame a 10 second penalty handed out to co-driver Alex Premat to storm home on the streets of Surfers Paradise.

There was drama with just six laps to go when Garth Tander was involved in a huge crash with Fabian Coulthard, ending Coulthard's race in spectacular fashion.

Tander was hit with a drive through pit lane penalty and 10 grid place positions for tomorrow's 300 km race. Coulthard is an unlikely starter for tomorrow after his car sustained massive damage in the crash.

Coulthard lashed out at Tander after the race, describing the crash was “unnecessary" and “easily preventable". Asked later about the penalty for tomorrow's race, Tander responded: "You're kidding".

When the race resumed, Van Gisbergen maintained his lead to take the checkered flag and extend his Championship lead over teammate Jamie Whincup to 160 points.

Scott McLaughlin and David Wall finished second after their recent disappointment at Bathurst with Whincup and Paul Dumbrell completing the podium in third place.

The Castrol Gold Coast 600 will continue tomorrow with the final 300km endurance race of the season to also decide the winner of the Pirtek Enduro Cup.
