ENGINEER'S NOTE

"Firestone Racing is excited to return to Indianapolis, our home away from home, for the month of May," said Cara Adams, Chief Engineer of Bridgestone Americas Motorsports. "The Race Tire Development group travels from Akron, OH, for the INDYCAR Grand Prix and then shifts focus to the most famous race in motorsports, the Indianapolis 500.

First things first, the Indianapolis Road Course is a 2.439 mile, 13-turn circuit that uses some of the same track as the Speedway. Our team has selected the race-proven compound Firestone primary tire with a newly updated front construction similar to what was used at Barber Motorsports Park to reduce oversteer in highspeed corners. We are introducing a new Firestone alternate compound for this year’s race, which is similar grip, but more heat resistant to meet the demands of the ever evolving Indy cars on this already fast race course."

Firestone will bring more than 1,500 tires to Indianapolis

Each entry will receive:

  • 7* sets of PRIMARY tires
  • 4 sets of ALTERNATE tires
  • 5 sets of RAIN tires
  • After practice session 1, each entrant must return one set of primary or alternate compound tires, and after practice session 2, each entrant must return one set of tires of the opposite compound returned in the first session.
  • New for 2017, teams will be given an extra set of alternate tires (for a total of 4 sets) to run on the first day of practice.
  • The rain tire is the same specification that was introduced in 2015.

*Does not include rookie set
