Will Champ Car race at Sebring?
In this Hot News item last week we broke the story that the Newman/Haas team with driver Bruno Junqueira will test the Sebring long course, the first time for a Champ Car. While in Sebring last week there was some speculation that Champ Car might consider racing at Sebring in conjunction with the 12 Hours of Sebring classic. Robin Miller jokingly mentioned it on Wind Tunnel Sunday night as well. For years we suggested that perhaps Champ Car race on Sunday following the Saturday 12 Hour race. After all, over 100,000 people, many young college students that Champ Car covets, are already gathered for the sold out event. Champ Car would have to qualify on Friday and take Saturday off while the ALMS puts on their show, but that's all doable. However, in talking to Champ Car personnel about this idea last week, mum was the word, with no real hint that it was being considered. Historically the track has been very bumpy, but nothing a good milling machine couldn't take care of. We suspect Junqueira's test is just a fact finding endeavor to see if it's feasible to race there. Imagine what a bonanza for road racing fans should this rumor ever materialize into something real. For now it's simply food for thought.
