For 5 years in a row now NASCAR has experienced a double digit drop in TV ratings across all networks, all races. This past weekend was no exception.

Social media is accelerating the plummet. It allows people to keep up with the action and not watch the race on TV at all, which kills because TV ratings are the lifeblood of sponsorship money in the paddock. At this rate Monster Energy will be able to renegotiate their title sponsor deal at pennies on the dollar, so the longer they wait the better for them.

FOX TV earned a 2.8 overnight for yesterday's Pennzoil 400 in Las Vegas, down 15.2% for last year's race that got a 3.3 rating. The race projects to be the most-watched sporting event of the weekend for what would be the first time this season, after facing the Olympics during first two weekends.
