Meira fired by Panther, may be hired by Jay Penske or Foyt

UPDATE #4 This rumor is upgraded to 'fact' today with this announcement. Our 2009 IndyCar Silly Season page above has been updated.

09/12/08 According to this SPEEDTV.com article, the hot rumor is that Meira will end up driving for Jay Penske's Luczo/Dragon Racing team. Another rumor has him replacing Darren Manning at AJ Foyt Racing.

09/04/08 Vitor Meira said Panther officials sent him an e-mail Monday to say his contract wouldn't be renewed for the No. 4 car he has driven since 2004.

"Put two and two together," said Meira, who spent Tuesday contacting other IndyCar teams.

Meira said returning to Panther in a second car is a possibility, depending on sponsorship. But team officials said they are also pursuing options with either Anthony Davidson, a former Formula One driver, or GP2 Series driver Mike Conway for 2009. Indy Star

09/03/08 (GMM) While Takuma Sato looks to resurrect his F1 career with Toro Rosso, fellow Super Aguri refugee Anthony Davidson may have to cross the Atlantic for his own return to a premier motor racing cockpit.

The 29-year-old Briton was a guest last weekend of the IndyCar team Panther Racing, as the American series raced at Belle Isle in Detroit — an event won by the former Minardi and Jaguar driver Justin Wilson, who is also English.

It has emerged that Davidson was scheduled to test for the team, which is reportedly looking for funding to expand to two cars, two weeks ago, only to injure his shoulder in a mountain bike incident.

Davidson's potential shot at IndyCar may have been aided by his connections with Honda, for whom he tested for several years in F1 before racing with Honda power at the satellite team Aguri.

Commentating for British radio, he was in the paddock at Valencia for the recent European grand prix, admitting that while he wants to return to the grid, "I would accept a place as a test driver".

08/30/08 Former Super Aguri Formula One driver Anthony Davidson is in attendance at Detroit this weekend as the guest of Panther Racing. Davidson was scheduled to test the Panther Dallara-Honda two weeks ago at Infineon Raceway but injured his shoulder while mountain biking. According to the team, Davidson and GP2 driver Mike Conway are in the running for a second seat if the Panther can find the funding to run a second car in ’09. SPEEDTV.com
