Tony George axed from power at Indy

UPDATE Tony George denied a SpeedTV report that he has been ousted from his leadership post at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. See IMS statement.

George, who has headed IMS for 20 years, came to the speedway's administrative offices early Wednesday afternoon to refute the SpeedTV report.

George said there was a board meeting Tuesday night, but said that discussion at that meeting was routine and did not involve his dismissal.

"I only found out about this a little while ago," George said. WRTV.com

05/27/09 The controversial, groundbreaking, tumultuous 20-year reign of Tony George at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway is over. SPEEDtv.com is reporting that George was voted out of power in a Tuesday night board meeting in Indianapolis. A source close to the situation told SPEEDtv.com that the 49-year-old grandson of Tony Hulman would no longer be CEO of the Speedway after a vote of the IMS board of directors which includes mother Mari, sisters Josie, Nancy and Kathy, attorney Jack Snyder and George.

Calls to Snyder and Fred Nation, IMS vice president of communications, were not returned to SPEEDtv.com and George did not respond to an email.

This comes on the heels of Tony's wife being fired from the Speedway by his sisters and Tony's statement about there possibly not being an IRL after 2012 if it was not profitable.
