Brett Moffitt Joins GMS Racing For 2019 Truck Series season

Just a day after parting company with former truck series championship-winning driver Johnny Sauter, GMS Racing announced they're filling their recent driver vacancy with another former champion – hiring defending NASCAR Gander Outdoors Truck Series champion Brett Moffitt as driver of the team's No. 24 Chevrolet.

Moffitt, who beat out Sauter, Justin Haley and Noah Gragson for the 2018 truck series title, had been without a ride after parting ways with Hattori Racing Enterprises after the season due to a lack of sponsorship. But with a title in his back pocket and six series wins last season, it was a foregone conclusion that Moffitt would stay unemployed for long.

Moffitt, who has been a journeyman driver most of his career, has made starts in all three of NASCAR's major touring series since making his first start in the Xfinity Series in 2012. His stint with GMS Racing will mark his third team in four years in the truck series.

"As far as the market goes, I had options open," Moffitt said. "None of them that would … necessarily continue to be in race-winning equipment, which is what I wanted ultimately. I had a few opportunities in some less-than-impressive Cup stuff and I had talks with some Xfinity teams as well, but the biggest thing to me is to go out and try to compete for a championship and win races. So, I was kind of holding out, hoping that a deal like this would come together."

Moffitt has had a past relationship with GMS Racing after running a race for the team's Xfinity Series operation in 2017 at Iowa Speedway – finishing 11th in his only NXS start that season.

"I’ve had a relationship with (GMS Racing) ever since running the Xfinity race at Iowa a few years ago," said Moffitt. "Just kind of always been talks on and off. When this opportunity opened up for them, I believe I was the first person they called about it. So, I’m just glad we were able to make it happen.

"I’m looking forward to being in an opportunity where I’m not just lucky to be in that position. I feel like GMS and the Gallagher family are really going to indulge in this and build a team around me and support me … I’m sure there will be challenges throughout the season but I feel like for the most part, we’re just going to put our heads down and work at winning races and winning another championship."
