Turkey to get the axe?

According to reports FOM Chief Bernie Ecclestone is thinking of removing the Turkish Grand Prix from the calendar in the near future as he aims to expand the Formula One series into even more new countries. According to Ecclestone, Turkey is not really commercially viable with a the smallest amount of spectators coming through the gates and with its contract up for renewal next year, it could be one to go.

“Maybe someone will decide they need a rest because it’s not working for them commercially. A good example is probably Turkey," Ecclestone was quoted as saying by Reuters. “They’ve built an incredible circuit and it might even be the best, but there’s not much enthusiasm from the public. I don’t know why. I am sure that in the years to come, we will lose a few races in Europe."

In the coming years we have several new venues to add to the ever increasing list such as Russia, India and Austin with several others still firm in Ecclestone’s sights such as Africa and Rome. Even though the attendance was moderate in Korea last weekend, Turkey’s numbers continue to fall every year while Korea’s are expected to increase.
