IndyCar tire bills to double in 2012?

Question: How much do you think Firestone subsidizes the overall cost of providing their tires if they charge the teams $300,000 to run a car for a full season? Is it possible Firestone would continue providing tires at cost even if it decides not to continue as a strategic partner? (David, Apex, N.C.)

Answer: Although I’m not privy to the books, there’s no question in my mind Firestone subsidizes the program. Veteran team leaders remember season tire bills of closer to $500,000. I think if Randy Bernard can get current teams to accept a tire bill that Firestone can live with for 2012, the manufacturer will stay for one more year before leaving. If a number can’t be negotiated, and I’m hearing Firestone wants more than $900,000 per entry, IndyCar will be in a scrambling position for 2012. Indy Star
