Could a dragway or dirt track be in the Kentucky speedway’s future? Parent company Speedway Motorsports Inc. (SMI) operates dragways near Bristol Motor Speedway, Charlotte Motor Speedway, Infineon Raceway and Las Vegas Motor Speedway. Charlotte, Las Vegas and Texas Motor Speedway also have separate dirt tracks.

“I think what’s more likely is we will probably redo that garage area," Simendinger said. “I think if we hadn’t had the major traffic issues last year, and had to devote as much money this year into that – we spent a lot of money – I think we might have actually…been reworking the garage area this year.

He continued later: “A drag strip, maybe, down the road. You know, Bruton (Smith, SMI chairman) loves drag racing and he built the only four-wide dragway at zMAX Dragway down in Charlotte. But before we do that, and before we ever do a dirt track, I think there’s still some things that we need to do here."
