Logano wins fuel mileage thriller

Joey Logano celebrates

Joey Logano edged past Kevin Harvick in his No. 22 Team Penske Ford after the 2014 Sprint Cup Series champion ran out of fuel on the final lap of the Cheez-It 355 at Watkins Glen International on Sunday.

Logano, 25, won his first Sprint Cup Series road course race in seven career starts at the New York track after qualifying 16th for the event.

The 2015 Daytona 500 winner now has two wins this season and only led one lap before taking the checkered at the Glen.

Harvick led a race-high 29 laps out of 90, but ran out of fuel at the end and finished in third place. Harvick's last win at Watkins Glen came in 2006.

Kyle Busch, Matt Kenseth and Kurt Busch rounded out the finishing top-five. After the Cheez-It 355, Kyle Busch is now in the top 30 in the Sprint Cup Series driver standings and is officially Chase-eligible with four wins this season. Busch must remain in the top 30 to retain his Chase eligibility, according to the waiver he was granted after his return from leg and foot injuries sustained in the season-opening XFINITY Series race at Daytona.

Pole winner and defending race champion, AJ Allmendinger, led 21 laps before his back-to-back win dreams were dashed when his car wouldn't re-start; he finished 24th.

"I shut it off trying to save fuel," Allmendinger said over the radio. "Last time I ever do that. … When I popped the clutch, nothing."

Brad Keselowski led for 27 laps and placed seventh.

Five-time winner at the Glen, Tony Stewart, headed to the garage with 30 laps remaining in the race due to issues with his No. 14 Stewart-Haas Racing Chevrolet.

Four races remain before the Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup begins, including the Pure Michigan 400 on Sunday, Aug. 16 at Michigan International Speedway (2:30 p.m. ET, NBCSN, MRN, SiriusXM).
