Ryan Newman picked up his second straight Lowe’s Motor
Speedway pole on Thursday night, besting the field to grab the top starting
spot for Saturday night’s Bank of America 500.
Newman’s lap of 189.394 mph was enough to knock Jimmie
Johnson from the pole, giving Newman his 42nd career Bud Pole Award and his
fifth of the season.
Johnson held on for the outside pole to lead the 12 Chase for the Nextel Cup
drivers. Bobby Labonte will roll off third, followed by Jeff Gordon and
Kasey Kahne.
Newman’s pole was his sixth at the speedway, where he holds the qualifying
record for the Coca-Cola 600.
Despite his qualifying success at Lowe’s Motor Speedway, Newman has yet to
record a Nextel Cup victory at the track, in contrast to Johnson, who has
five victories but no poles at the 1.5-mile quad oval.
“Today was all about qualifying and doing what we had to do,” said Newman.
“Maybe some people just might say I’m not as good a race car driver as I am
a qualifier because I don’t ever win from the pole when I start on the
pole.”
Labonte’s third-place starting spot is his third top-10 start in the last
four races, coming just one week after touching off a multi-car crash at
Talladega Superspeedway.
Jamie McMurray, Matt Kenseth, Kurt Busch, Casey Mears and Greg Biffle
rounded out the top ten qualifiers.
Chase drivers Denny Hamlin and Kyle Busch will start 11th and 13th,
respectively, with Carl Edwards starting 18th. The rest of the Chase field
did not fare as well, with Kevin Harvick starting 24th, followed by Richard
Childress Racing teammate Clint Bowyer in 25th. Jeff Burton will start 27th
in RCR’s third entry, followed by Tony Stewart in 29th and Martin Truex, Jr.
in 32nd.
Six cars failed to make the field, including Dale Jarrett, Joe Nemechek,
Brian Vickers and Sam Hornish, Jr.
Only one incident marred Thursday's qualifying session, as final qualifier
J.J. Yeley looped his no. 18 Chevy during his run.
